St. Peter's Youth Group is new to the scene. Our goal is to know ourselves and each other better, to get to know God as real in our lives, and to help make the world a better place through service opportunities. With a dedicated group of Youth Leaders (Yea, Caitlin and Kristin!) and a Planning Committee made up of youth, parents, and clergy, we held our first Youth Group event the week of Thanksgiving 2006, with a service event - volunteering at EQUINOX, making Thanksgiving dinners for the poor and homeless. Thirteen youth and adults from St. Peter's came out to get their hands messy boning cooked turkeys, to wrestle with giant dish-washing machines, and to mop the floors of the industrial kitchens under the Empire State Plaza. There was also an impromptu race to see who could get their cart full of mashed potatoes from one end of the concourse to the other the fastest.
Our second event was Christmas caroling at the homes of parishioners who, through age and infirmity, are prevented from joining us in Sunday worship. Seven youth and adults visited the homes of two parishioners and spread Christmas cheer while our infant tag-alongs wailed in time to the music.
Our third event - in January - was a trip to the Youth for Christ EXCEL Youth Leadership Conference in Saratoga Springs . It was an all-day event with thousands of other capital area youth hearing dynamic speakers, experiencing powerful worship, and meeting other Christian youth.
In February, our Youth Group will take a trip to the Regional Food Bank to volunteer our labor, and we'll help with St. Peter's annual Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper.
In March, our regular meetings will start up with a huge kick-off event (watch your leaflets and Newsletters for more information), and our theme for the Spring will be Worship. Regular meetings will take place every two weeks and will consist of social time, live contemporary worship, and spiritual discussions. Youth ages 11-16 are welcome to participate, and youth ages 16 ½ or older may become Youth Leaders and help plan, organize, and lead the Group alongside Fr. John.
